Four Shades of Grey History
Four Shades of Grey is the product of many years of playing music in a variety of genres that started way back in the late Seventies when two friends from church got the idea to play at a church gathering. That was Clay Derryberry and Dannie Haislip. As a result several drummers joined the two and played music and called the band "ALLIANCE". In the early Eighties, a young man by the name of Randal Jones joined the group fresh out of high school. Randal had known Clay and Dannie for most of his life and the fit was perfect. Clay played bass guitar, Dannie played 6 string electric guitar and Randal played what he did best, the drums. ALLIANCE continued on for several years until Dannie found himself out of work when the largest plant in Lewisburg (ICP) closed. Dannie was uliimately forced to find work out of town and working the night shift. This unfortunate change would not allow Dannie to continue with the band for a while. (You still find ol' Dannie picking with us from time to time...)
It was then that Clay and Randal convinced Clay's younger brother Andy to join the group. Playing a somewhat different style of music and catering to a quieter and "unplugged" style of music, the three found many new opportunities to play at funcitions different from what they were used to.
After a few paying gigs, the band continued to improve and expand its show format. With a lot of help and influence from the band's longtime friend Mike Mosier the band expanded it horizons even further. Two years ago the band was invited to participate in the new "Battle of Rock Creek". A requirement of entry in this battle of the bands competetition was that all participating bands had to have a drummer. Enter Evan Jones, son of Randal who is an up and coming musician in not only drums but other instruments. Evan is a former member of the Marshall County High School Marching, Concert, and Jazz Bands as a percussionist. So now, there are Four Shades of Grey.
